I’ve always been a mountains kind of person, but after several days at North Myrtle Beach South Carolina I learned how much I loved the beach. Or maybe it was being with family. Or both.

I had recently acquired an iOptron SkyTracker but cloudy night skies in Columbus Ohio had prevented me from trying it out. My first clear night came during a visit to Lamoni Iowa, a location that is also blessed with dark skies far from big city lights.

There was an art exhibit of Chihuly Glass at the Franklin Park Conservatory in Columbus Ohio. I went and took a lot of photos. Eventually the exhibit left town, but a few permanent pieces remained. This is one of them.

It was supposed to be up for two or three months (their usual length for exhibits), but it was so popular they asked me to leave it up for 6 months.

To get the most accurate colors your camera is capable of creating you need to set a custom white balance. Every camera does this a little differently, but it involves taking a picture of an 18% gray card (or something pure white) and using that photo as a standard to create a custom white balance setting. I will show you the process with a Canon camera, but other brands should be somewhat similar. Check your camera’s manual for specific instructions.

Photographing religious ceremonies is important to me. This image was captured at a communion service in Worthington Ohio. I wanted the cross on the wine tray in focus and I wanted one or two people in the background. I had to change the camera location just enough so there were some people directly in line with the cross.

Favorite Photo, February 28
I spent a few days photographing Colorado and ended up at the Great Sand Dunes. During the day the sand is light in color, much like a light colored sandy beach. Late in the day the light hits at such a severe angle that the dunes turn almost brown.

I taught photography at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts when I lived in Michigan. One of my favorite field trips was to take my classes to the Episcopal Cathedral, even if it was a nature photography class.

It was a beautiful evening in Rocky Mountain National Park. Sirius, Orion, Taurus, and the Pleiades star cluster were shining brightly in the night sky. The sun set at 5:50 pm and I clicked the shutter at 6:43 pm. The beautiful blue sky was due to the long, 30 second exposure.

Upper Tahquamenon Falls in deservedly one of the most popular tourist locations in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Another photographer and I mostly had the place to ourselves with only a few other people around. I am surprised more people don’t go in the winter.

There weren’t a lot of wildlife to be seen on this particular day in February. After the fall rut ends, most of the elk retreat into the forest. But I was lucky enough to find this group of young bulls on the edge of the forest in Horsehoe Park.
