Thirty plus years go, when Mike Baroli (my favorite camera store rep) told me I “had to go” to my first photography seminar, I signed up, paid my $25 for the evening seminar and went to see Ernst Wildi. I was blown away.

Guess what I am doing this week? Re-working the presentations for my master class this Saturday evening in Lamoni. I do this before every class, workshop, and seminar. I revise this and that, add new things, and work on ways to make what I do even better. The primary emphasis for this class will be portrait photography.

I was leading my annual June photography workshop in Northern Michigan and we were on a night photography field trip. It was a gorgeous night. At just the right time we were able to catch the edge between twilight and night with the planet Venus and stars over Lake Michigan. This is one of my two most favorite photos for this date.

My favorite photos for August 14 all came from the same year, 2016. I was leading a photography workshop in Northern Michigan and we were out on an evening field trip. It turned out to be a great evening for photography, so it was hard to pick THE favorite photo for the day.
All my favorite photos for August 12 were again (August 11 post) from Jeremy Bruskotter and I’s second nature photography workshop at Gibraltar Island for OSU. Out of those photos my most favorite image was the group photo toward the end of the morning field trip. A little Photoshop might have been involved.
UPDATE, June 3: Due to a last minute cancellation we have one slot open this weekend. This is your chance to register. Go here.

I’ve been in Northern Michigan for the last several days leading a photography workshop. It takes a lot of gear. Laptop, two digital projectors, video player, a stereo sound system, 16×24 display prints, loaner closeup equipment so everyone can do closeup photography that doesn’t have closeup gear, my favorite nature photography books so people can look through them and see what they might want to buy in the future as their skills increase, copies of my photography book, collapsible fabric 18% grey cards so they can do a custom white balance settings in the field, shutter speed charts, hyperfocal distance charts, three different exposure guides, and more. Oh, almost forgot, my own photography equipment.
