The Last Roll of Kodachrome – Part Two
The National Geographic video story on the last roll of Kodachrome.
You can see large versions of many of these photos at the link below.
The Last Roll of Kodachrome – Part One
In 2009 Kodak announced they would discontinue Kodachrome slide film. It was a sad day for a lot of photographers and the end of an era. Pros and amateurs alike had a love affair with the Kodachrome that lasted 75 years. Photographers everywhere stocked up on the remaining rolls of film. One of the most famous images of all time, Steve McCurry’s Afghan Girl, was photographed on Kodachrome film. McCurry had exposed over 800,000 frames of Kodachrome in four decades, much of that for the National Geographic. At Steve’s request, Kodak gave him the last roll off the production line.

The Search for “Afghan Girl” – Part One
This haunting image of “Aghan Girl” was photographed in a refugee camp in Pakistan in December 1984 by Steve McCurry. She appeared on the June 1985 cover of National Geographic. She has become one of the most famous faces in photographic history.
Natural Light Glamour Photography at fstoppers
A teaser version of this article by Nino Batista showed up at Manfrotto and the long version at fstoppers (link below). While I usually prefer softer light outdoors you can shoot in full sunlight if you know what you are doing and avoid harsh shadows across the face.
Some Days Are Amazing!
Some days are “so so”, some days are average, and some days are amazing. This is not the best time of year to photograph birds at the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge, but July 14 was amazing. This photo of a feeding Snowy Egret was just one of many fine images from the morning. He stabbed at his prey and it came out of the water but not in his beak.
Favorite Photo Places: Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge
Located on the east side of San Francisco Bay near Fremont, California, the Don Edwards San Fransisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge is one of my favorite places to go when I am in the Bay Area.

A Tribute to Bill Cunningham
Bill Cunningham is one of my photographic heroes so it was a sad moment when I learned of his passing. My wife and I were driving across the U.S. early this week when she found an article on her iPhone that Bill Cunningham had died. I made a mental note to write a tribute to Bill when we got back home.
The Chinese Lens Rip Off! Part One
After reading a glowing review you order a set of smart phone lenses and you are billed over $100. You get socked with an additional $85 shipping charge (the ad said shipping was free). Then you find out you could have bought the same lenses for less than $10. To add insult to injury you discover the great review was from a fake review site and the quality of the lenses is disappointing. You’ve been ripped off.

In Remembrance
Richard Duane Klug (the name just above the rose) was born January 26, 1946. He died in Darlac Province, Vietnam, November 14, 1967 at the age of 21. He is one of over 58,000 American soldiers that died in Vietnam, and one of over 1.1 million American soldiers that have died in all American wars (almost half of them in the Civil War). It is with a profound sense of gratitude that I reflect on the lives of those who “gave the last full measure of devotion” on behalf of their country.
POTD: Reflections
My concept was to photograph a young woman in a stream with reflections of her and the trees in the ripples of the water. I had just the right stream in mind and at this time of year there was just enough water. This isn’t the pose I originally had in mind. More about that later.
