Water, sand, and grit can wreak havoc with ordinary cameras, so unless you have a waterproof case for your camera (more about that later), your best bet is to get is to get a rugged, waterproof camera for underwater and the beach. This is especially true if you are around salt water.

Favorite Photo, November 13
My favorite photo for this date was created at a rather remarkable and rare event. Dr. Yim, who teaches at Graceland University in Lamoni, Iowa, did a performance of legendary avant garde composer Eric Satie’s “Vexations”. He played it 840 times which took 27 hours and 22 minutes.
Veterans Day
Favorite Photo, November 10
There is only one photo for November 10 in my “favorite photos” folder, so by default it is my favorite photo for this date.

It was a gorgeous fall morning in Columbus, Ohio, and Sunny and I went for a walk. This particular street is lined with beautiful maple trees so it is my favorite street in the neighborhood to walk down in the fall. This is my favorite image for November 2.
November Photography Trip, Where Should You Go?
Fall is winding down in many parts of the country. Maybe things are looking a bit drab where you live and you are longing for something more interesting. What are the best nature photography destinations in November?
Favorite Photo, November 1
I spotted this beautiful maple tree while out for a walk and grabbed an iPhone image. It is my favorite photo for November 1.
Favorite Photos – October
Here are my favorite photos for the month of October. The story behind this “favorite photos by date” project is here.
Favorite Photo, October 31
All of my favorite photos for October 31 were taken at an Army vs Eastern Michigan University football game.
Favorite Photo, October 30
All of the photos in my “favorite photos” folder for October 30 are portraits. It must be a portrait kind of day.
Favorite Photo, October 29
As part of our favorite childhood places trip, my brother John and I made our way to Rocky Mountain National Park. The Park was in its “in between phase” between the splendid colors of fall and the beauty of winter. Once the aspen drop their leaves and the elk disappear back into the trees at the end of the fall rut, the park is not as visually splendid until snow blankets the park
Favorite Photo, October 28
If you read the October 27 post, you already know why the Colorado trip with my brother John was so important.
Favorite Photo, October 27
It is difficult to put into words what this photo means to me.
Favorite Photo, October 26
This is hands down my favorite image for October 26. I am holding our son Jim III a few days after he was born. We were visiting family and friends in North Platte, Nebraska. The camera was a simple Kodak Instamatic (you can see it in this article). It would be a few more years before I had a camera with actual controls.
Favorite Photo, October 25
With so many photos to choose from it was hard to pick a favorite photo for today’s date.
Favorite Photo, October 24
When I lived in Ohio I would be in kirtland in the fall almost ever year. The fall colors were especially vibrant the year I took this photo. This is my favorite image for October 24.
Favorite Photo, October 22
If you have been following along for the last few posts, you know what is coming: More photos from Acadia National Park. October 22, a year ago today, was my last morning in the park.
Favorite Photo, October 21
If you have been reading the last few posts, it will not surprise you to know that most of my favorite photos for this date were taken in Acadia National Park. It is one of our very best national parks for fall photography and it is still looking great this time of year.
Favorite Photo, October 20
My “favorite photos” folder covers 30 plus years of photography, but all but two of my favorite photos for October 20 were taken the same day in Acadia National Park.
Favorite Photo, October 19
It was my first full day at Acadia National Park and I was in photography heaven. My research into the best season to photograph each of the national parks made one thing clear, Acadia was one of the best places to be in the fall, and this was my first trip to check the place out.
Favorite Photo, October 15
This is the only photo in my “favorite photos” folder for October 15. There are over 3400 images in my favorite photos folder. That averages out to about 9 photos per date, scattered across all of the dates of the year. But in real life it doesn’t work out that way. For one relatively recent date (September 29) I have over 50 favorite photos and for some dates I have no favorite photos at all.
Favorite Photo, October 13
My favorite photo for October 13 started with a note from a photo editor asking if I had a nice fall image of Pt. Iroquois Lighthouse. I said I didn’t but I was heading up north and I would try to get one.
Favorite Photo, October 11
Shannon Miller is the most decorated U.S. gymnast, male or female, at the Olympic Games, with a total of 7 medals. She was part of the gold medal winning “Magnificent Seven” team at the 1996 Olympics. It was my happy privilege to photograph her a few months after she won several medals at the 1992 Olympics.
Favorite Photo, October 9
My favorite photo for today is also one of my all time favorite fall color images.
