Photographing religious ceremonies is important to me. This image was captured at a communion service in Worthington Ohio. I wanted the cross on the wine tray in focus and I wanted one or two people in the background. I had to change the camera location just enough so there were some people directly in line with the cross.
I spent a few days photographing Colorado and ended up at the Great Sand Dunes. During the day the sand is light in color, much like a light colored sandy beach. Late in the day the light hits at such a severe angle that the dunes turn almost brown.
I taught photography at the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts when I lived in Michigan. One of my favorite field trips was to take my classes to the Episcopal Cathedral, even if it was a nature photography class.
It was a beautiful evening in Rocky Mountain National Park. Sirius, Orion, Taurus, and the Pleiades star cluster were shining brightly in the night sky. The sun set at 5:50 pm and I clicked the shutter at 6:43 pm. The beautiful blue sky was due to the long, 30 second exposure.
This was the second day of our photo shoot. We wanted to create the illusion that Lyn Marie was falling. She dressed in bold colors and everything else in the studio was totally black. This is my favorite image for today’s date.
There are over 3,000 photos in my “favorite photos” folder, and only one of them was taken on February 1. Yes, our Christmas tree was still up.

These ornaments were a gift, so they are special. We always hang them side-by-side on the Christmas tree. It was January 31 and we were going to take the tree down (yes, we leave the tree up for a long time), so I was taking a few photos of the tree. This is my favorite image for January 31.
When Selina and I scheduled this shoot, we knew it would be chilly in late January, but we had no idea when they day arrived that it would be bone chillingly cold. But we decided to go ahead anyway. So she made the trip from Kentucky to Columbus Ohio for our photo shoot.
This is our daughter-in-law Catharine and our grandson Terran, so it should be obvious why this is one of my most favorite images for January 28.
This is a very special ornament. It is a gift from my mother-in-law who is no longer with us. This angel stirs up all kinds of memories and emotions. That is why this is my favorite image for January 27.
White Sands National Monument is one of my favorite places on the planet. I highly recommend it as a top priority photo destination. In January you pretty much have the whole place to yourself.

Mojave Desert near Fort Irwin California. January 6, 2014.
When we go to Fort Irwin, it is my custom to get up early each morning, head out into the Mojave Desert, and take pictures. I wanted to capture some of the volcanic rocks around Mount Blackie and still provide a sense of place. I created this image with my iPhone. This is my favorite photo for this date.
Southwest Jet Over Las Vegas at Dusk, Looking Southwest. January 4, 2013.
On our trips from Ohio to see family in California, the least expensive route is usually through Las Vegas. When the winds are out of the west I always try to get a seat on the right side of the plane so I can get photos of “The Strip” as we take off (next photo below). Keep that in mind the next time you fly our of Vegas. One of the perks of flying Southwest is to choose a seat based on the photos you want to take during the flight.

Tonight (January 3-4) is the night of the Quandrantid Meteor Shower. This article will tell you what you need to know to see and photograph the first meteor shower of 2019. Predictions are always just estimates, but this shower is predicted to produce about 25 meteors per hour. Best of all, this will be a dark sky night without interference from the moon.

Landscapes photos are rare for me in December since we aren’t usually traveling unless we are going to see family for the holidays. But in 1985 we were driving across country on I-40 to spend Christmas with family in California. The Grand Canyon isn’t far from I-40.

It is December and most of my favorite photos are of family, friends, and models. My favorite photo for December 19 is this image of Dina, a model in Ohio. I used one studio light to camera left, bounced out of an umbrella, to create the semi-high contrast light. The camera was right on the floor to catch some of the reflection in the hardwood floor.

The short story: You can buy this same exact lens on Amazon for $10 – $15, or on eBay for $3 – $4. Don’t pay the $37.99 price in the ad. The lens quality is lousy. Lots of people have been ripped off by some of the companies selling these overpriced lenses.
