Tripod Head Recommendations: Some of the Best of the Best

Two ball heads and two 3-way heads.

A good tripod head will save you lots of frustration. For still photography I recommend two types of tripod heads. If you do a little of everything you will want a quality ball head for the quick and easy aiming of the camera. If you only do landscape or architectural photography and you want precise separate controls in each axis of motion, you will want a 3-way head.

The Chinese Lens Rip Off Series – Overpriced Camera Phone Lenses

The ads show up on FaceBook all the time. They talk about wonderful lenses that will turn your smart phone into a camera that is better than a DSLR costing thousands of dollars. They brag about German engineering, a NASA optical formula, or the testing that proves their lenses are better than expensive lenses from Nikon, Zeiss, Leica, or Canon. The names of the companies change on a regular basis, but the scam is the same. Sad to say, a lot of people actually fall for this nonsense.

Estimated Print Life from Wilhelm Imaging Research

Estimated Print Life from Wilhelm Imaging Research

Because they don’t have the right information, and they may have no idea that prints have such widely different life spans.

Favorite Photo, November 11

Lightning, east of Lubbock, Texas. November 11, 1988.

You can determine the direction of the storm front, set up a few miles away from where the front will pass by you, prefocus the lens, and lock open my shutter and wait for a lightning strike. This is my favorite lightning bolt from this particular storm.

Acadia National Park at Night, Maine. October 18, 2017.

Last fall I went on my first trip to Acadia National Park. I arrived long after sunset but that was not going to stop me from taking pictures. I drove into the park, found a small parking area beside the road and stopped to take pictures.

Autumn Leaves, Columbus, Ohio. October 14, 2012.

I was taking our dog for a walk through our neighborhood and looking at all of the fallen leaves. I stopped and took a picture of this cluster of leaves with my iPhone. I processed the photo with one of my favorite smart phone apps, Painteresque. It is my favorite photo for this date.

Favorite Photo, October 7

Sunset, Vermilion Lakes, Banff National Park, Canada. October 7, 2012.

This is the story behind one of my favorite images. It was a dreary cloudy, day in Banff with rain and drizzle off and on all day long. Most of the afternoon I was hanging out in the fireplace room at a bed and breakfast and visiting with the other guests, all Canadian.
