Memory Box Vault – Don’t Get Ripped Off

The internet is flooded with a thinly disguised advertorial in the form of a questionable review by a fake reviewer. No responsible review of film scanners (I checked 10, links below) recommends the Memory Box Vault. They don’t even mention it. It ships from overseas so you have no legal protections if you can’t get your money back. And despite the $149 special price, you can buy it unbranded at Amazon for about $55. The reviews at Amazon are mixed and some of the Amazon reviewers say this scanner is terrible.

The “review” at The Image Archive Report site is by supposedly by “James Calloway”, a “Certified Film Archivist”. He says, “Together with my team” they tried six “home digitization solutions”. If he is an expert and has a team, he must be on the internet. I did a Google search and “James Calloway, Certified Film Archivist” does not exist. I could find no such expert anywhere else. His name and a stolen image exist only in this advertorial.

I grabbed this photo from the advertorial and did a reverse image search.

You can see the result. This is a photo of Professor Graeme Dewhurst in the medical profession.

Here’s part of his page at Canterbury Christ Church University where he has provided the leadership and support for the training of 8,000 postgraduate medical doctors.

By now you should be very suspicious of the “review” at the Image Archive Report.

Not surprisingly, the bogus review gives the Memory Box Vault an “A+” Rating.

Also not surprising for such a biased review, they give the Epson Perfection V600 a “D” rating, even though real ratings of film scanners (see the links below) give the Epson Perfection V600 very high marks. It is one of the best flatbed film scanners

In my opinion, The Image Archive Report is fake attempt to sell a cheap, questionably made scanner from a foreign country at three times the price you would pay at Amazon.  And I wouldn’t even buy it at Amazon based on the reviews.

If you want to scan your own slides or negatives, check out the real reviews in the links below from people who know what they are doing.  You will see which film scanners show up again and again as high quality products. Some of them are quite economical.

And if you don’t want to scan your slides and negatives yourself, the Kodak Digitizing Box does a great job of scanning film. Legacy Box comes in at a very close second.  (Ignore the fake review of the Kodak Digitizing Box and the fake photos that accompany the fake review.)
