Grand Canyon at Dawn

Grand Canyon at Dawn, Arizona. December 2, 1985.

Landscapes photos are rare for me in December since we aren’t usually traveling unless we are going to see family for the holidays. But in 1985 we were driving across country on I-40 to spend Christmas with family in California. The Grand Canyon isn’t far from I-40.

We stopped at Grand Canyon National Park for the night. The next morning, long before sunrise, I took this picture. It is my favorite for this date. Fortunately for me, it snowed overnight, and the morning light was beautiful. This is one of the most stunning places on the planet, and a must see for every photographer. As in a lot of landscape photography, the best light is often early and late in the day.

Mayan Ruins at Altun Ha, Belize. December 22, 2006.

In 2006 we went on a family cruise for Christmas. One of the stops was Belize, so we went on an excursion to the Mayan ruins at Altun Ha. This is my second favorite image for this date. If you are on a cruise that stops for the day at Belize City, Belize, it is worth the bus trip to go to Altun Ha.
