Favorite Photo, December 4

Graham Parsons and the Go Rounds. The Strutt. Kalamazoo Michigan. Dec 4, 2009.

I was in Kalamazoo for a fashion show followed by a series of local bands in concert. This photo of Graham Parson and the Go Rounds ended up being my favorite photo of the evening, and one of only two favorite photos for this date in my “favorite photos” folder.

I chose a wide lens focal length (17mm), put my camera right on the stage, got as close as I could, and shot up so I would get the band and the stars on the ceiling. I like this angle. I used a flash to freeze the initial action, but chose a long shutter speed (1/4 second) to get some motion blur after the flash went off. Using flash and “dragging the shutter” is an oft used technique by National Geographic photographers.

My second favorite photo for this date with a more traditional angle and a longer lens focal length (183mm). The mixed lighting, which I like, is from the spotlights with different colored gels. I used a slightly longish shutter speed (1/15 second) to blur his hand.
