Favorite Photo, August 30

Union Officer, Civil War Days, Lamoni, Iowa. August 30, 2014.

As I looked at my favorite images for August 30, I quickly narrowed my choices down to three, but then it got really difficult. I ended up with a landscape image, a portrait, and a wildlife image. I wanted to call it a three way tie, and depending on my mood, I pick a different image out of theses three each time I choose a favorite.

So as of right now, I am picking the portrait. Ask me tomorrow and I might very well pick either of the other two images.

I was really taken by this person portraying a Union Officer. The eyes. The beard. The lines in the skin. It just all comes together. This is one of my all time favorite portraits.

Caribou, Taiga, Denali National Park, Alaska. August 30, 2000.

My second choice for the day is a caribou in Alaska. I was with a photography group led by George Lepp. He predicted the route of this caribou, lined us up where we could each get a great shot, and told us not to make a sound and too barely move or we would spook the caribou. We did as he said and the caribou walked right by every one of us.

Sunset from our cabin at Camp Denali, Alaska. August 30, 2000.

My third pick of the day is a sunset photographed from my cabin door in Camp Denali Alaska. It was taken the same day as the caribou photo. I love the way the light glows in the cloud.

When I first picked these three images, I picked the sunset as my favorite. Who knows which image I would pick tomorrow?

I was one of 16 photographers who spent the week with George Lepp as part of a five day special emphasis week at Camp Denali. They bring in a different photographer every year. Other special emphasis weeks are held throughout the season. Camp Denali is a great place to go for photography or several other reasons.
