PHOTO OF THE DAY – DANCER, BALLET MANILA

The annual Asian Festival in Columbus, Ohio is a great opportunity to take pictures. This photo of a dancer with Ballet Manila is one of my favorites for the day. Ballet Manila is on their 2005 U.S. tour.

The festival is held every spring on the Franklin Park Conservatory grounds on E. Broad Street. This year (2005) the festival is May 28-29. More information is at the the festival website.

The photo was taken with a Canon 20D digital SLR and the Canon EF 70-300 DO IS lens. The lens is sharp. On the full size digital file you can count every eyelash.

My online album of festival photos is here.

NEW EPSON PRINTERS

New Epson Printers

Epson has announced replacements for all of its upscale, archival printers. The new models are the 2400, 4400, 7800, and 9800. They replace the current 2200, 4000, 7600, and 9600. A new ink set has been created for these printers which includes three black inks. Preliminary testing indicates that prints will have an even longer archival life than the already excellent life span of prints from the current printers. The street price for all four printers should be about the same as for the printers they replace.

You can read more at Digital Outback Photo and The Luminous Landscape.

PHOTO OF THE DAY – BIGHORN SHEEP

Bighorn Sheep
Bighorn Sheep, Guanella Pass, Colorado. Copyright (c) Jim Doty, Jr.

I had crested Guanella Pass and was heading north toward Georgetown, Colorado. I came around a curve and found two bighorn sheep. I took my first few photos right out the car window in case they ran off. (It is a good idea to have your camera and lenses nearby for unexpected photo opportunities.) They didn’t spook, so I got out of the car, set up my tripod and took some more photos. As they fed they got closer and closer until I was able to get the photo above.

TAKING QUICK PORTRAITS

I was taking a short water break from mowing my lawn and I noticed Will’s sister was having trouble with her camera. I would rather take pictures than mow, so I went to grab my camera. Will was all ready to leave for the prom and we only had a couple of minutes to do a few casual portraits (the style of the portraits is casual, certainly not the clothes). This one is his favorite.

BEN STEIN’S LAST COLUMN

Ben Stein wrote “Monday Night at Mortons”, a column at E! Online. I received a link to his final column, “How Can Someone Who Lives in Insane Luxury Be a Star in Today’s World?” It is a retrospective on his changing view of things and the real stars in our world.

You can read it here.

If the link fails or the column goes away, you can read the complete column on page 2 of this post.

TIM GREY AND DIGITAL IMAGING

If you haven’t become acquainted with Tim Grey already, let me introduce you. Tim used to be George Lepp’s digital guru. He taught classes at Lepp’s Institute of Digital Imaging and launched the DDQ email service (more about that in a moment). His articles have appeared in Outdoor Photographer, PC Photo and other magazines. Tim really knows his stuff. He was snatched up by Microsoft a few months ago. Tim is providing a wealth of free information.

GRAY MARKET PHOTO EQUIPMENT

What is “gray market” (parallel import) photo equipment? It costs less but is it worth it? Is it the same as “U.S. warranty” equipment? What are the risks in buying gray market gear? Does the gray market dealer matter? Learn more here.

NEW NIKON CAMERAS

First there were the rumors, then the brief and “accidental” announcement on a website, then the official Nikon pre-announcement. Today it is official as Nikon announces the D50 and D70s. The D50 is a simpler and less expensive version of the highly respected D70. The D70s is a replacement for the D70.

DP Review has posted a hands on preview of the D50 which is well worth reading if you have a bunch of Nikon lenses and you are thinking about making the switch to digital, or if you want a less expensive backup for your D70. I will keep you posted when full reviews are available.

I have a love-hate relationship with “RAW” digital camera files. I love the capabilities inherent in RAW capture, but processing the files is such a pain. Several things have happened, no thanks to the camera manufacturers, to improve the situation.

SEATTLE PI – BEST PHOTOS OF 2004

Seattle PI Best Photos of 2004

So what happens when the newspaper photographers at the SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER each pick their ten best photos of the year?

Back in the 80’s and early 90’s I did freelance newspaper photography for a small town paper in Oklahoma. Back in those days, everything was shot on black and white film with short deadlines. I appreciate a truly fine, eye catching newspaper photo, especially since the time constraints on newspaper photographers are often severe.
