Late April through early May is a great time of year to be in Big Bend National Park. Flowers are in bloom (assuming some rain), temperatures are warm but not yet insufferable, and best of all, the sun sets in “The Window”.
The Chisos Basin is a bowl shaped basin in the Chisos Mountains in the middle of Big Bend. The “V” shaped notch called The Window is the only view to the world outside the basin. The sun sets in The Window from later April to early May. Come earlier or later in the year and the sun won’t set in The Window. But don’t let that discourage you from coming any other time. Big Bend is spectacular from fall through spring. Summer is still spectacular but miserably hot.
