The road over Marshall Pass is one of my favorite fall color drives in Colorado. All but four of these photos were taken on the road over Marshall Pass with a short side trip to O’Haver Lake. O’Haver Lake is a favorite place for me. When I was growing up our family went there every summer to camp. Two years ago today I drove over Marshall Pass from east to west with a side trip to O’Haver Lake. The thumbnails on my iPhone created such a nice collection of photos that I did two screen captures to get all 90 of these images. My phone labeled the first screen capture Salida which is a small town near the beginning of my trip. My phone labeled the second screen capture Saguache, a small town south of Marshall Pass.
The first two images were created in Poncha Springs, not far from the east end of the road over Marshall Pass. The second to the last photo is at the Tomichi Creek Trading Post in tiny Sargents at the west end of the road over Marshall Pass. It is one of my favorite places to eat. The very last photo is on top of Monarch Pass. All of the rest of the photos were taken on the drive over Marshall Pass and the side trip to O’Haver Lake.
To find the road over Marshall Pass, at Poncha Springs go south 7 miles on U.S. 285. Then follow the signs on your right to go west to Marshall Pass and O’Haver Lake. You will be on well maintained county roads from summer through fall and any passenger car will do just fine. After the first big snow fall the road deteriorates. You will come to an intersection where you continue on to O’Haver Lake or turn right to go over Marshall Pass. O’Haver Lake is only 1/2 mile from the intersection and is well worth the side trip. The county road continues climbing to the top of Marshall Pass. From there it is downhill until you reach U.S. 50 at Sargents. You can continue west on U.S. 50 to see more of the southern Colorado, or go east over Monarch Pass and back to Poncha Springs and Salida.
