Big Boy No, 4014 visits Tama Iowa, June 1, 2026.

Big Boy No. 4014 is the biggest operating steam locomotive in the world. It is on a cross country tour from Wyoming to the east coast and then back across the country to Colorado and back to Wyoming. It is massive at 133 feet long and weighs 1.2 million pounds. That is 44 1/3 yards, nearly half a football field in length.

12 super steam locomotives, exactly like Big Boy, were built, and Big Boy No. 4014 is the only one that is currently functional. It was restored by Union Pacific.

Big Boy rolls into Tama Iowa.

People came from all over. Long lines of cars rolled into town before the scheduled arrival, and long lines of cars waited to get out of town when it was over.

Maintenance.

Using compressed air from the engine, bolts on the large wheels were tightened. Cameras and smart phones were everywhere.
