St. Malo Center, Colorado. February 24, 2008.

This series of articles is kind of a nostalgia thing. Rocky Mountain National Park is one of my favorite places on the planet and it has been a while since I have been there. I am usually here in the summer or better yet in the fall, my favorite season in Colorado, but I am usually not keen on winter photography trips. But here I was, 18 years ago today.

This was the beginning of a 6 day photographic adventure in Colorado, my first in the winter. I have been in Colorado in the winter for short family events (like Christmas gatherings), but this was my first winter trip specifically for photography.

On the way from Denver to Estes Park I took the Peak to Peak Scenic Byway and stopped along the way to photograph the outside of the St. Malo Center.

The first day was cold with snow clouds swirling around the peaks.  After a long drive there wasn’t much time for photography on the first day.

I did find a nice group of elk to photograph.
