Favorite Photo, April 21

Prickly Pear Cactus, Texas.
Prickly Pear Cactus, Texas. April 21, 1993.

I left the Rio Grande Valley in the southern tip of Texas and I was headed for Big Bend National Park. Somewhere between Laredo and Del Rio I spotted these Prickly Pear blooms.

They were backlit by the sun and there was a dark background which really made the flowers pop. Exposure is tricky in a backlit situation. One approach is to use Basic Daylight Exposure plus one or two stops. Another is to get close and meter just one flower and then add about one stop of light. Whichever approach you use, bracket your exposures to make sure you nailed the shot.

This is my favorite photo for April 21.
