Favorite Photo, November 11

Lightning, east of Lubbock, Texas. November 11, 1988.

The southwestern U.S. has some wonderful thunderstorms with well defined storm fronts. You can determine the direction of the storm front, set up a few miles away from where the front will pass by you, prefocus the lens, and lock open my shutter and wait for a lightning strike. This is my favorite lightning bolt from this particular storm.

Thunderstorms are dangerous so you should have someone with you sitting in the safety of a car. If you get hit by a feeder bolt, they can jump out of the car and give you CPR to re-start your heart. It is a good idea for you to be inside the car most of the time and fire your camera remotely. That way you only need to be out of the car when you re-aim your camera.
