I recently watched The Devil Wears Prada for the first time. Fascinating and fun movie. In one scene, Amanda (Meryl Streep) the very particular and tough-as-nails editor of RUNWAY magazine says to Andy (Anne Hathaway) her new 2nd assistant, “Did Demarchelier confirm?” Andy is clueless. So Emily (Emily Blunt), Amanda’s 1st assistant, grabs a phone and says, “I have Patrick”. I got the Demarchelier reference instantly. I am a huge fan of Patrick Demarchelier’s work. You may not recognize his name but you have probably seen his work.
Amanda in the movie is based on Anna Wintour, the difficult to work with, very particular, and hard-as-nails editor-in-chief of VOGUE since 1988. Like Amanda in the movie, Anna called on Patrick as one of her favorite go to photographers. He is an amazing portrait photographer. He worked with the best of the best fashion models, as well as celebrities. Princess Diana called him “a dream” to work with. Demarchelier worked for almost every major fashion magazine and he photographed ad campaigns for Dior, Louis Vuitton, Celine, TAG Heuer, Chanel, Donna Karan, Yves Saint Laurent, Tommy Hilfiger, Carolina Herrera, Vera Wang, Elizabeth Arden, Zara, Max Azria, Express, Longchamp, Blumarine, Lacoste, Ann Taylor, Calvin Klein and Ralph Lauren.
I’ve been acquainted with Demarchelier’s work for a long time. All of the images below are copyrighted by Demarchelier or his assigns.
