He carried a pistol. She carried a flask. He romanticized Detroit. She rejected it. But what they shared was a belief in communism, a thirst for tequila and a passion for each other. Discover how they left their mark on Detroit. And how Detroit left its mark on their art. Exclusively on view at the Detroit Institute of Arts, Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in Detroit brings together nearly 70 works of art that depict the evolution of these two extraordinary artists’ careers, including eight of Rivera’s epic preparatory drawings for the Detroit Industry murals and 23 pieces by Kahlo, whose work has never before been shown at the DIA.”

I just learned about this exhibit today. If you are or will be anywhere near Detroit between now and July 12, don’t miss this! I will be planning a trip to Detroit to see this exhibit.

I was quite taken by the movie Frida (with Salma Hayek and Alfred Molina) and the way some of Frida’s major works were incorporated into the movie, not to mention how Hayek and Molina captured the incredibly stormy relationship. Hayek is stunning in the title role for which she received a much deserved Academy Award nomination. If you can watch the movie Frida before you go to DIA, by all means do it. It will put the uniqueness of her art into the perspective of her difficult life. Frida is available on Netflix and Amazon Prime. Due to the nature of Frida and Diego’s relationship, this movie is not suitable for children or young teens.

And if you can’t go to Detroit to see the exhibit in person, the movie is a great introduction to their lives, her work, and his murals.

For you avid photography buffs, Italian photographer Tina Modotti is played in the movie by Ashley Judd. Modotti was also a model, one of famed photographer Edward Weston’s favorites, and she appears in Diego Rivera’s work. She was also a revolutionary political activist.

Links

Rivera – Kahlo Exhibit Information at the DIA

Frida Kahlo at Wikipedia

Diego Rivera at Wikipedia

Frida – the movie – at Wiipedia

Tina Modotti at Wikipedia

DIEGO RIVERA AND FRIDA KAHLO IN DETRIOT. Sunday, March 15, 2015 – Sunday, July 12, 2015. “Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo were an explosive couple.
