June 30, 1995.

This is another hard date to pick a favorite photo. If you have been following this series you know there are about 3400 images in my “favorite photos” folder, which would average out to about 9 photos for each date of the year. But some dates have a lot less, or none at all. The folder for June 30 has 38 favorite images to pick from.

I was wandering the bog part of the trail at the West Lake Nature Preserve in Portage Michigan when I spotted this incredibly patient Eastern Ribbon Snake in a Blueberry bush about four feet off the ground. I made a very slow approach and the snake did not move. I took several images at a variety of apertures to try different amounts of depth of field. This is one of my most favorite images for this date. It kind of has an Adam and Eve and Snake in a Tree feel to it.

If you are in SW Michigan, West Lake Nature Preserve is a great place to take pictures from early spring until late fall.

Baby cygnet Trumpeter Swan, Seney National Wildlife Area, Michigan’s U.P. I spent time photographing this baby swan with its parents. I love this particular photo because the baby swan is looking up at the face of one of its parents. It is one of my favorite photos.

Trumpeter Swans, Seney National Wildlife Area, Michigan’s U.P. Tuesday June 30, 1998.

The Mackinac Bridges is one of my favorites, as is this image. I created this image for a friend who lived in Michigan for several years and was moving out of state. He wanted a reminder image of his happy years in Michigan. This is a double exposure on film. The moon was actually higher up in the sky and farther to the left. A wide angle lens that would capture both the moon and the bridge would make the moon very tiny (moon size in a photo is directly related to the lens focal length). I used a normal focal length lens to capture the bridge. Then on the same frame of film I photographed the moon using a 300mm lens. Today you could take two separate digital images and combine them in the computer.

Links

Series: Favorite Photos by Date – all about this series

West Lake Nature Preserve

Seney National Wildlife Refuge

Tahquamenon Falls State Park

This is another hard date to pick a favorite photo.
