Here are my choices, grouped by state from west to east. This list includes the favorites I have been to and want to go back to again, plus the ones I haven&#8217;t seen and most want to photograph.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><em>Posted April 22, 2017. It is also remote so keep your gas tank well above half full.<\/p>\n<p>Redwood and Joshua Tree are two very different but excellent parks to visit in the spring, especially if you catch them when the wildflowers are in bloom.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Arizona &#8211; Grand Canyon, Saguaro<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15675\" style=\"width: 528px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.jimdoty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/170404-Grand-Canyon-5D3-9902-w7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15675\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15675\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blog.jimdoty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/170404-Grand-Canyon-5D3-9902-w7.jpg\" alt=\"The Grand Canyon, Arizona\" width=\"518\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15675\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Grand Canyon, Arizona<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The Grand Canyon is amazing any time of year. I&#8217;ve only been there in the winter. I am overdue a spring trip.<\/p>\n<p>The giant saguaro cactus in southern Arizona are impressive. This is high on my must do list.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Utah &#8211; Bryce Canyon, Zion, Capitol Reef, Arches, Canyonlands, Dead Horse Point<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Oh my! Southern Utah is amazing! Any of the desert parks are well worth your while. Temperatures can range from quite pleasant to pretty chilly (especially Bryce). I am all for quite pleasant. It is one of my most favorite places. Make Moab your headquarters and visit all three.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15664\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.jimdoty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/110501_DHP_5D_9366_w7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15664\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15664\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blog.jimdoty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/110501_DHP_5D_9366_w7.jpg\" alt=\"Dead Horse Point, Utah\" width=\"700\" height=\"467\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15664\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dead Horse Point, Utah<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Dead Horse Point is a state park, not a national park, but it is one of the most stunning viewpoints on the planet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Colorado &#8211; Great Sand Dunes<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Dunes 700 feet tall are the prominent feature at Great Sand Dunes National Park. And it is lightly visited in the spring.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14384\" style=\"width: 530px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.jimdoty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/071007-Sand-Dunes-5D3-7350b-w7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14384\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14384\" title=\"Great Sand Dunes\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blog.jimdoty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/071007-Sand-Dunes-5D3-7350b-w7.jpg\" alt=\"Great Sand Dunes\" width=\"520\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14384\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Great Sand Dunes<\/p><\/div>\n<p>When it gets really late in the day the normally light toned sand dunes darken to almost a chocolate brown.<\/p>\n<p><strong>New Mexico &#8211; White Sands, Carlsbad Caverns<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14389\" style=\"width: 483px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.jimdoty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/930125_White_Sands_AWI37_w71.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14389\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14389\" title=\"White Sands New Mexico\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blog.jimdoty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/930125_White_Sands_AWI37_w71.jpg\" alt=\"White Sands\" width=\"473\" height=\"700\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14389\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">White Sands<\/p><\/div>\n<p>White Sands is a great spring location, and you can beat the summer heat. The low angled sunlight can turn the white gypsum sand into wonderful colors. Spring temperatures range from chilly to warm and balmy.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15671\" style=\"width: 482px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.jimdoty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/900504-Claret-Cup-Cactus-White-Sands-AKL21-w7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15671\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15671\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blog.jimdoty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/900504-Claret-Cup-Cactus-White-Sands-AKL21-w7.jpg\" alt=\"Claret Cup Cactus. White Sands New Mexico.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>While you are in southern New Mexico you should also go to Carlsbad Caverns, one of the most impressive cave systems in the United States. The temperature down in caverns hovers around 56 degrees year around.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Texas &#8211; Big Bend<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Like everything else in Texas, Big Bend National Park is seriously BIG. I generally prefer mountains to deserts, but Big Bend and White Sands in New Mexico are the exceptions. Like the rest of the desert parks in the southwest, spring temperatures vary widely from chilly to hot.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14392\" style=\"width: 610px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blog.jimdoty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/930422_Boquillas_Rio_Grande_AXI-14_j63.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14392\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14392\" title=\"Boquillas Canyon, Rio Grande River\" src=\"http:\/\/www.blog.jimdoty.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/930422_Boquillas_Rio_Grande_AXI-14_j63.jpg\" alt=\"Boquillas Canyon, Rio Grande River\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14392\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Boquillas Canyon, Rio Grande River<\/p><\/div>\n<p>I recommend you go to Santa Elena Canyon in the morning, Boquillas Canyon for late afternoon light and sunset, and go everywhere else in between.<\/p>\n<p><strong>North Carolina \/Tennessee &#8211; Great Smoky Mountains<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I love the Great Smoky Mountains in the summer and fall. Spring is on my to do list. It is highly recommended as a spring destination.<\/p>\n<p>Book Note: If you are going to the Great Smoky Mountains, John Netherton&#8217;s book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Guide-Photography-Smoky-Mountains-Netherton\/dp\/0962058203\/ref=as_sl_pc_tf_til?tag=jimdotycom-20&amp;linkCode=w00&amp;linkId=1bfe6d46286c3f23d73eb20b0143ac7c&amp;creativeASIN=0962058203\"><em>Guide to Photography and the Smoky Mountains<\/em><\/a> is essential reading.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Virginia &#8211; Shenandoah National Park<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ve crossed Shenandoah National Park several times going east and west, but never when I have had time to stop. It is reported to be one of our best national parks to photograph in the spring when everything is in bloom. It is on my list.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Best of the Best<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of the best national parks to photograph in the spring, which are the best of the best? That&#8217;s a tough call, but here they are. Keep in mind I am a mountains, canyons and deserts kind of guy. These are really close together on my priority list. Ask me tomorrow and the order will be different. In fact, I have already rearranged this list several times.<\/p>\n<p>Yosemite<br \/>\nDeath Valley<br \/>\nGreat Smoky Mountains<br \/>\nBryce Canyon<br \/>\nGrand Canyon<br \/>\nSaguaro<br \/>\nArches<br \/>\nBig Bend<br \/>\nShenandoah<br \/>\nCarlsbad Caverns<\/p>\n<p><strong>Photography Guide Books<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Once you get to a national park, how do you know where the best photo locations are in that park?
