Compare that to where you really were when you took the photo. It is as simple as that, with a couple of wrinkles.

Here’s an example. I took photos of this carving (photo above) with an iPhone (for the GPS) information, and with a DSLR. This is the iPhone photo.

GPS Location, Buddhist Temple

Then I checked the GPS data for the photo using Photoshop (from the menu choose File > File Info > GPS Data). The yellow push pin in this graphic shows the location for the GPS coordinates captured by my iPhone. But I was actually right below the carving at the bottom steps that lead up to the entrance to the temple. I marked my actual location with a red X. I was about 15-20 feet east of the GPS coordinates. For reasons described in Part One, this amount of error isn’t that unusual.

GPS Series Links

“How To” Series: Using GPS in Photography – An Overview

“Where Were You When You Took Those Photos?”

The Why and How of Adding GPS Information To Your Photos

How To Get GPS Coordinates Into Google Earth

Checking the GPS Location Accuracy of Your Camera, Part One

Checking the GPS Location Accuracy of Your Camera, Part Two

Comparing the GPS Accuracy of Three Cameras

Using Google Earth to Find the Name of a Mountain (and How to Get GPS Info Into Google Earth)

Geotagging Aerial Photos: The Joys and Frustrations of Using GPS on an Airplane

Using Google Earth in 3D Mode to Label Aerial Photos

Satellite Communicators: The GPS Messaging Devices That Can Save Your Life

Geotagged Photos: Posting Photos Online Can Put Your Family at Risk

Related Links

The dragon image is also used in this article: Having Fun with Jeffrey Friedl’s Image Metadata Viewer

GPS accuracy information at GPS.gov

The fastest way to check location accuracy your camera’s GPS information is to take a photo at a known location that you can pinpoint on a map.
