Well, we didn’t really meet by chance. Tiana is a first class model (and photographer too) living in the San Francisco Bay Area. Our first photo shoot together was 8 years ago in Ohio. She looks terrific on location and in the studio so on my most recent trip to California I made arrangements for another photo shoot.

For the image above my exposure was determined by metering her face and adding one stop of light (“plus 1” exposure compensation). That gave me a nice exposure for her face glowing, backlit hair, and great skin tones. Exposure accuracy is essential to great colors (see the article in the links below).

For the lower photo with the water and sky reflection I metered the brighter side of her face and added 1 stop of light. The sunlight was diffused by clouds for the lower photo. If the sunlight had been more intense the photo would have been too contrasty.

One of the great things about working with first class professional models is they know how to pose. And if you want to make posing suggestions along the way, they can do that too. A good shoot has a fair amount of creative synergy. Tiana is superb.

If you are working with amateur models you need to make a lot of posing suggestions. Professional models save you a lot of time.

Tiana is currently using this photo for her Facebook profile which really made my day.

Photo Data (Bridge): Canon 5D Mark III.
