Incident Light Metering on the Cheap

Pink Ladyslipper Orchid Metered Using a Gray Card

A simple $12 accessory will do most of the work of a $300 incident light meter. Hard to believe? Keep reading.

A gray card is about a close as you can get to a photographic free lunch. It will do many of the things an incident light meter will do at a fraction of the cost, and some things a incident light meter can’t do.

If you want to simplify your metering life, get better exposures, save money, hone your subject tonality skills, and set the white balance on your digital camera more accurately, a gray card will do it, and you can buy a pair of 8×10 gray cards for about $12. I can’t think of a less expensive way to become a better photographer.

All the details are here.
